Out of total recall medical devices 10% recalls are attributable to packaging failures and 31% of those are due to a hole in the packaging. Therefore correct selection of packaging is a crucial but complex decision, and statistics suggest it is often not carried out correctly. The key factors to consider while choosing the packaging materials and design are the specific nature of the medical device and the intended sterilization methods (e.g. ethylene oxide (EO), gamma irradiation, electron beam, steam, low-temperature oxidative), its intended use, expiry date, transport and storage.

The standard medical device packaging should be made of known and traceable materials, non-toxic, non-leaching and odourless, free of holes, cracks, tears, and creases and localized thinning, intended for use in medical applications. It must also allow sterilization, provide physical protection, maintain sterility up to the point of use and allow aseptic presentation. Medical device packaging is used to minimize safety hazards to both patient and user, to protect the device during transport and storage, to ensure that the device is sterile until point of use and to minimize the risk of contaminants to the patient and those involved in device transportation, storage and use.

Diagnostic centers, hospitals and therapeutic equipment manufacturers are key players involved in the growth of medical device packaging market size. Also huge investment along with high-tech equipment and technology in the healthcare industry will enhance the industry growth. Increasing healthcare expenditures and increasing government subsidies in the developing economies along with growing health awareness among aging population may boost industry growth. However, increasing Different government regulations over the medical devices packaging process in different countries and large initial investments are acting as a barrier for the growth of the market.
